What We Do

One of the aims of the McSence Group is to support local people and communities. We do this by creating employment opportunities within the McSence companies and by supporting local groups and volunteers.  Below is a list of some of the main functions McSence organises or supports within the community.

McSence Grants Association

McSence Grants Association exists to distribute McSence profits back to the community in the form of grants to groups and individuals.  Throughout the year McSence makes many donations around the community for those individuals and groups who need our support. Recent groups to benefit from grants include nurseries, youth groups, senior citizens groups, schools and sports clubs.

Mayfield and Easthouses Youth Project (Y2K)

In 2000 McSence purchased the disused Church of Scotland manse in Mayfield and undertook a £300,000 project to convert this to a youth centre.  Y2k, supported by McSence, now provides facilities for around 200 members including PCs with internet access, games, drama workshops, music lessons and many other activities.  The centre also provides other functions such as educational support and personal development workshops all designed to provide a constructive and positive destination(s) for our young people.

Gala Day

McSence sponsors this event every year on the first Saturday in June when crowds line the streets and watch the many acts on the main stage in the local park. Children voted as “Best Boy and Girl” from each primary school lead the parade in decorated cars and are  awarded gifts on the main stage.  A free reception is provided in the Community Centre for dignitaries, guests, the “Best Boys and Girls” and their families. A parade starts from Easthouses Club at 1.00pm and makes its way through the community to the public park.

Entertainment and competitions, such as football tournaments, gymnastics competitions, pony riding, and quad biking are held throughout the day. Many community groups set up stalls to raise funds. Gala day is a real community event, with entertainment throughout the day and the celebrations continue into the night in the clubs and lounges.

The next Gala is usually the first Saturday in June i.e. 2nd June 2018 (to be confirmed)

McSence Entertainment Group

This is a social club funded by McSence. Volunteer entertainers give their time to entertain people at Mayfield Community Club, Easthouses Club and Easthouses Bowling Club. They also  support the McSence Help in Home Service where all profits raised are used to provide activities such as tea parties and bus trips.

Burns Event

This is an annual event sponsored by McSence and is held at Mayfield Combined School. All local primary schools are involved in celebrating the life and work of Rabbie Burns. Pensioners are given free tickets to attend and watch Burns recitals by the pupils and enjoy singalongs to the bard’s songs. The haggis is then piped in, followed by lunch. This is always a well-attended and enjoyable event.

Annual Community Senior Citizen Dances

These are held in Mayfield Community Club and Easthouses Club. This is a free event sponsored by McSence, where senior citizens are entertained, given a buffet meal, free drink on arrival, free bingo and raffle tickets. A separate event is held in both clubs to allow senior citizens to attend their nearest venue. These are always well-attended events and widely anticipated each year.

Fireworks Display

This is an annual event held on 5th November in Mayfield Public Park. Gates open at 6.00pm and entertainment for younger children is held in a marquee before the main fireworks display. The display lasts 40 minutes and is a spectacular event enjoyed by many locals and people from further afield.
