What We Do

One of the aims of the McSence Group is to support communities and we do this through creating employment opportunities within our own companies and by supporting groups and volunteers directly within the community.

Below is a list of some of the main functions McSence organises or supports within the community. Please see our News section for current events.

McSence Grants Association

McSence Grants Association exists to distribute McSence profits back to the community in the form of grants to groups and individuals.  Throughout the year McSence makes many donations around the community for those individuals and groups who need our support. Recent groups to benefit from grant include nurseries, youth groups, senior citizens groups, schools and sports clubs. We also recently helped our local schools with designing and building props for their annual play and we are currently helping the Jay Johnson fund where £40,000 needs to be raised for Jay to have an operation in America.

Mayfield and Easthouses Youth 2000 project (Y2K)

In 2000 McSence purchased the disused Church of Scotland manse in Mayfield and undertook a £300,000 project to convert this to a youth centre.  Y2k,  supported by McSence, now provides facilities for around 200 members including PCs with internet access, games, drama workshops, music lessons and many other activities.  The centre also provides other functions such as educational support and personal development workshops all designed to provide a constructive and positive environment for youngsters who may otherwise go off the rails.

Gala Day

This is a sponsored event by McSence and held every year on the first Saturday in June. Approx 3000 people line the streets and enter the park to see the many acts, presentations on the main stage. We have a Best Boy and Girl from each primary school who lead the parade in Fancy cars and are awarded a gift on the main stage. We provide a free reception for dignitaries and guests and Best Boy and Girls and their families in the community centre. The parade starts off from Easthouses Club at 1.00pm then up through the community to the Public Park.

Entertainment and competitions are held through the day, football tournament, gymnastics competitions, pony riding, quad bikes etc. There are also stalls with various member groups in the community selling wares to make funds for their group. The community comes alive on the Gala day with entertainment through the day which continues through the night in the clubs and lounges.

McSence Entertainment Group

This is a social club with upfront funding provided by McSence. We have volunteer entertainers on our books who give their time free to entertain people in our clubs, Mayfield Community Club, Easthouses Club and Easthouses Bowling Club and we also have bingo and a raffle on the night to raise funds going forward. The entertainment  group also supports the McSence Help in Home where all profits from this company will be used to provide activities such as tea and bus trips etc.

Bead Making

This is a new venture where McSence have a volunteer who we have provided with funding for bead making equipment. The girls have made various items of jewellery charm bracelets, earrings, necklace sets which will be sold at our local gala days. Hopefully we will sell a few items to allow for more funding to be ploughed into more beads and equipment needed.

Burns Event

This is a McSence sponsored event held every year Mayfield Combined School involving all the local primary schools, in honour of Rabbie Burns. Pensioners are given free tickets to come along to see the Burns recitals by the pupils and enjoy some entertainment where they can sing along to the Scots bard’s songs before the piping of the haggis then sitting down to enjoy a haggis lunch. This is always well attended and enjoyed by all.

Annual Community Senior Citizen Dances

These are held in Mayfield Community Club and Easthouses Club. This is a free event sponsored by McSence where senior citizens are entertained, given a buffet meal, free drink on arrival, free bingo and raffle tickets. One is held in each club to allow pensioners to attend their nearest venues. This is always well attended and looked forward to by the senior citizens every year.

Fireworks Display

This is an annual event held on 5th November in Mayfield Public Park. This event is always well attended by local communities even when the weather is not so good. Gates open at 6.00pm and entertainment for the younger children in the way of Punch and Judy shows is held in a marquee before the actual display. The display lasts approx 40. mins and is a spectacular thing to see with a lot of money spent by McSence on fireworks.
